 Ligation of Hemorrhoids

What is it?

Hemorrhoids, commonly known as piles, are abnormally enlarged and bulging blood vessels in and about the anus and lower rectum. Ligation, also known as the rubber band treatment, is one of the procedures for removal of small hemorrhoids.

What to expect

This procedure involves placing a small rubber band at the base of the hemorrhoid with a special applicator. The rubber band cuts off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid. The band and hemorrhoid eventually fall off after a few days, and the wound usually heals in a week or two. You may experience some mild discomfort and bleeding.

It is important to avoid constipation or straining following the procedure for hemorrhoids or the condition may recur.
