Finger Numbness

I frequently have the sensation of pins & needles in my hand. What could it be?

If you often have numbness or a tingling sensation in your fingers particularly over the thumb, index and middle fingers, you may in fact have carpal tunnel syndrome. This may be associated with weakness and difficulty grasping objects.

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a medical condition which occurs when a nerve running through your wrist gets compressed leading to sensations of numbness or even pain. It is more common in females and can occur at any age.

What is the cause?

In most cases, the cause is unknown. Although it has been postulated that repetitive acts involving the wrist may be a cause, this is under much debate. Carpal tunnel syndrome may also be trauma related such as in a patient with a history of fracture or dislocation of the wrist.  Non traumatic causes including pregnancy and hypothyroidism may also cause carpal tunnel like symptoms.

How will my doctor determine I have carpal tunnel syndrome?

Your doctor, after taking your medical history, will conduct a clinical assessment including specific tests to try to elicit your symptoms within the clinical setting.

He may, if the diagnosis is not very clear, suggest nerve conduction studies or electromyography. In some instances, he may also suggest imaging such as an MRI or ultrasound.

Is there any way to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome?

Some tips include:

    • Frequent rest periods from repetitive movement requiring excessive finger movement
    • Stretch your wrist during these breaks
    • Reduce the strength of your grip in task involving your hands such as in holding your pen when writing
    • Alternate between different tasks if possible
    • Avoid bending your wrist all the way down or up
    • Have good posture when typing at yur desk
    • Keep your hands warm, wear fingerless gloves if your workplace in cold

What can I do if I already have carpal tunnel syndrome?

If the reason for your symptoms is due to an underlying cause such as hypothyroidism, your doctor will aim to treat this and this in turn will bring about relieve of your symptoms.

Other options if an underlying cause has been excluded are:

    • Physiotherapy
    • Use of wrist braces and splints
    • Pain killers/steroid injections
    • Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery

Your orthopaedic surgeon will be the best person to advice you on the option most suited for your needs.
